I think a very high % of “progressives” are very hung up on status issues and have very brittle senses of self-esteem. Putting down large #s of their fellow-citizens as yahoos is an ego-protection strategy.

Similarly, Maureen Dowd has apparently blamed her lack of romantic succcess on th ehypothesis that “men aren’t attracted to powerful women.” But Maureen Dowd is not a powerful woman. Angela Merkel is a powerful woman. (new Xerox CEO) Ursula Burns is a powerful woman. And so on. Dowd is merely a fairly-well-known writer.

Here also, it’s a defensive strategy to ensure that the problem is located anywhere other than within oneself.
