I’ve always held Blackfive and his team in the highest esteem.

Until today.

Maybe it’s me.  Maybe I’m the one who’s fucked up.  I don’t see any good coming out of making fun of a sick, twisted, evil man.  I simply can’t think any less of Cho.  I never thought I’d think of Blackfive and his crew as cheap and petty though.  I think this takes away from their excellent reporting on our service members, and is going to hurt their cred if they ever have to report on vets with emotional/mental disorders.

Pointing and laughing at the sick, twisted, dead guy to try and keep the other sick, twisted sickos from acting out?  I dunno, I’m thinkin’ the fact that they’re sick and twisted kind of presumes they’re not going to care what Uncle Jimbo thinks.

This thing is going to keep on bringing out some real strong emotions and the true colors that are flying are telling.  It’s not just Blackfive and his team, it’s sort of all over the place.  People I thought better of are trying to get as much mileage out of this horror show as they can.

Yeah, I do that.  I have favorite writers and I do put them on a pedistal.

I don’t care if you’re anti-gun, pro-gun, pro-media, anti-media or want to hitch your presidential campaign to this thing.  I think once the emotional hangover hits, there are a lot of people going to be wondering what the hell they were thinking.  Of course, that could be ME in a couple of weeks too so wtf?  Press on.

I’m just all choked up.

Professor Liviu Librescu, 76, threw himself in front of the shooter, who had attempted to enter his classroom. The Israeli mechanics and engineering lecturer was shot to death, “but all the students lived – because of him,” Virginia Tech student Asael Arad – also an Israeli – told Army Radio.

Several of Librescu’s other students sent e-mails to his wife, Marlena, telling of how he blocked the gunman’s way and saved their lives, said the son, Joe.

Snipped from Blackfive.

“Why can’t these whack jobs just skip everyone else and just go straight to killing themselves?”

Indeed.

Our hearts and prayers to the families of the victims and to the family of the shooter.  I’m sure they never thought they’d raise a mass murderer.

UPDATE:  I’ve deleted all comments and have closed them.  I’m sorry.  I will not have a discussion about “more guns” or “less guns” or video games or movies or any of that other shite.  I’m sorry.  I can’t do it.  The politicalization of every event must stop somewhere.  I won’t be part of hijacking this horror show for any cause.

…has written yet another essay.

SEEING THE UNSEEN, Part 2:

As usual, the whole thing is so very good, but here’s a taste:

You know who I blame for this pathetic state of affairs? I blame Leonard Nimoy. I remember watching In Search Of… as a teen and always being just a little disappointed that there was so little – you know, proof — in any one of those episodes. In Search of Atlantis, In Search of Ghosts, In Search of Ancient Astronauts, In Search of the Bermuda Triangle, In Search of UFO’s…, In Search of, in other words, every conceivable hoax and superstition on the face of the planet. And I watched it in spite of the lack of actual proof and I believed it all because it presented one thin string of opinion and falsehood cloaked as “evidence” and no one rebutted a word of it.

“We’re just asking questions” was the official, voice-over disclaimer. You hear that too from the 9/11 Truth crowd when confronted with the lunacy of their claims. We’re just asking questions…

Well, in that vein I’d like to ask some questions myself. Is Michael Moore a serial pedophile? I’m just asking, and I’m sure a lot of my readers would just like to have some questions answered. I heard that Rosie O’Donell ate a baby at a Satanic Ritual once – is that true? Can you please provide the evidence that this did not in fact happen? Thanks. Who has murdered more hookers: Bill Maher or Charlie Sheen? Come on, you can’t tell me there’s no smoke there. I just want a possible explanation…

So that’s what it has come to now. We deserve better.

God damn it, we do.

That’s just a very small part of it, you must go read the whole thing.  Bring a soda, it’s a long one, but don’t skip the setup.

…and yes, I do care more about what’s happening on American Idol than what’s happening around our world these days.  I have about as much effect on one as the other and AI doesn’t give me as much of a headache as listening to yahoos on both sides of the spectrum lose their minds over this week’s deep socio/economic/geo-political item of the week.  It’s become painfully apparent that neither party paricularly cares about winning the war against terrorism, so I’ve stopped caring about them other than hoping beyond hope we have a couple of solid candidates to vote for come next fall.  Personally, I’m hoping for Fred Thompson.

Haven’t done this one for awhile.

Saving Grace – Tom Petty

Sweet Cherry Wine – Tommy James and the Shondels

Is it just me or is Sanjaya on American Idol simply trying to see how Gawd-Awful he can be and still get away with it? I have a hard time believing that he’s taking it seriously any more.

While I’m thinking about it, J-Lo is coaching tonight. When I saw Gwen Stefani a couple weeks ago, I decided her cred was completely toast. But does J-Lo say more about her cred or American Idol’s?

What’s your feeling about Idol this year?

It’s the worst season I’ve ever watched but I’ve only been around since the end of the season with Fantasia so I’m not an ol’ timer.

All around the world the glad tiding, “He is risen.” is expressed in too many languages to count.

He is risen. He died for our sins and yet three days later He comes back and shows us that there truly is everlasting life. It’s perhaps the greatest story of forgiveness and redemption ever written.

I’ve heard a lot about how there’s an attack on Christianity in the media and how the left particularly dislikes fundamentalists. I don’t think that’s quite it. I think there’s a universal apprehension growing for any sort of fundamental belief in the “God who must be obeyed.” that is expressed in the Judeo/Christian/Muslim tradition. And I’m going to go further and say it’s not belief in that God that’s under attack, but those who misuse the belief in that God. They are the ones that many folks, left, right and center are growing increasingly apprehensive about.

Thanks to whack jobs of all religions who have done things in His name, the word “fundamentalist” has taken on a very dark meaning. I hear “fundamentalist” and I immediately think of Islamic terrorists. If I think Christian fundamentalist, I think of the folks who attack gay people based on Leviticus, perhaps the most sociopathic book in The Bible. Jewish fundamentalists I understand the least. I think the hats and sideburns are way cool though.

I’m a believer. Or, rather I should say, I’m a seeker. I believe that there’s a God and I use that word because it’s easy to say and easy to spell and most folks have a good idea of what I’m talking about. Is that God expressed best by The Bible, by The Koran, by the Tao te Ching, or by The Complete Witches Handbook? I can’t tell you. I don’t know. But I continue to pray and meditate and seek to become closer to that entity that I call God. For me religion simply gives you common guides for community expression and a sense of community.
I respect and even envy people who have been exposed to a religion and immediately say to themselves, “Yes, this is what I believe. This is the set of rules I’m going to live my life by.” It seems much easier than what I tend to go through. I have to admit though that along with that envy and respect, I have no small amount of fear toward those folks. The purely rational part of me screams, “It’s a BOOK. Written by MEN trying to consolidate their power base! What’s the MATTER with you? You may as well live your life based on the Greek Myths.” Christian friends ask me if I don’t believe in The Bible, where do I place my faith?

My prayers are simple. I pray for the knowledge or God’s will for me and the strength of character and courage to carry that will out. If I’m in a particularly brave frame of mind, I’ll throw, “God change me, no matter what.” out there. It’s short, but it’s not a whimpy prayer by any stretch of the imagination.

Where do I place my faith? As a cradle Catholic, I can’t ignore the Christian faith that was programmed into me at an early age. Those symbols are pretty much ingrained in me. They’re a part of me. I use those symbols and stories as guides in my life. My favorite Gospel is Matthew and I would have loved to have been part of his Church. Communal living with the closest of friends all with a similar core belief? How cool must that have been?

But I think I can wrap up my faith in one word and the weird thing is that it comes from the Hindu which I’ve speant very little time studying. The word? Namaste. The easiest translation is, “The spirit which resides in me recognizes the spirit which resides in you.” For me that’s the very best expression of our journey here on Earth. Within all of us is some piece of the devine, the potential for spiritual life everlasting is within each and every human.  It’s the ultimate expression of unity. Part of the devine is within me and it sees the devine within you. Namaste. He is risen. Namaste.

My faith is in that someday, somehow, we’ll put all the stories and all the symbols together and use them to unite us all in a true brotherhood of man instead of separating us into conflicting tribes.  That’s where I place my faith.

Remember the little girl who won the talent show, “America’s Got Talent?” Bianca Ryan? You know, the one that made Brandi stand up with her mouth hanging down?

Apparently she snuck an album out last fall when we weren’t watching and she has her own web site. I have to admit, until recently, if it wasn’t on iTunes I wasn’t paying much attention to new releases.

The album is a little too overproduced. The songs are all standards. But anyone who can listen to her version of The Rose and not have their heart torn out needs to simply shoot themselves, they’re already dead. I think if she doesn’t self destruct she’ll be bigger than any female singer out there today because she’s better than just about anyone I’ve ever heard in my 45 years on this planet.

I have to admit it feels weird saying that about a singer this young and I pray that she goes toward Rock vs AC or Country, but DAYUM. She’s got some serious pipes.

Can anyone explain to me how anyone could give Khalid Sheik Mohammed the benifit of the doubt while assuming that your own country tortured the man into confessing?

How much self-loathing does that take?

My take?  You know that guy who’s like 25 years old and has a “life experience story” for everything that comes up and if you take the time to add it up, he should be about 75?  Yeah, Khalid is like that.  I bet if you asked him he’d say he was at CBGBs when The Clash first came over.

Last week I started getting a bit excited about the 2008 Election. Why? Senator/Actor Fred Dalton Thompson may be throwing his hat into the ring. I loved him as the Rear Admiral in “Hunt for Red October.” I’ve liked him in just about everything I’ve seen him do on the screen. I was immediately excited about there finally being a decent candidate to vote for.

The problem for me is that until I started reading up on his political history, all I knew about him was from the characters he’s played on film and television. That’s what excited me.

I’ve studied entertainment. I know more about the history of entertainment in politics and religion than the average person, and STILL, my heart rate went up when I heard that a person that I recognized as an actor was possibly running for the Presidency.

The good news is that I’ve had those studies and I was able to calm down and actually start reading up on this guy.

He’s VERY conservative. I’m not saying that’s a good thing, or a bad thing, I’m just saying that’s what I’m reading about the man. Okay…that actually fits with most of the characters I’ve seen him play. No surprises. So as an actor, he seems to have chosen to play parts that he relates to. Okay, let’s be honest, as an actor, my guess is that he doesn’t do all that much acting. He’s hired to play himself. Watch “Hunt for Red October.” Then watch a few episodes of “Law and Order.” Same guy.

Now…here’s the hard question. What if he’s absolutely nothing like the characters he’s been playing? What if he’s the kind of actor who plays one character all the time? What if it’s all an act?

I don’t think it is. I think that’s why I’m still excited. Because one thing that Fred Dalton Thompson seems to be in every aspect of his life that he shows the public is a grown up. A grown up. I don’t think we’ve had a grown up in office since the first President Bush left the White House. Reagan was a grown up. Carter…not so much. Ford was a grown up. The current President? In my mind he did the best he could with what he had but was far too insulated by the people he trusted.

I certainly don’t see another grown up running. Maybe there’s another one in the background, waiting to join the fray. I don’t know. I do know that we certainly need some solid leadership in the coming years. We need a grown up.

Let’s hope it’s not all an act.

HAMPTON, Va. —  A drill sergeant at Fort Eustis in Hampton is accused of forcing a male trainee to dress as Superman and submit to sexual acts.

Officials say Army Staff Sergeant Edmundo Estrada also faces charges of indecent assault, having an inappropriate relationship with a trainee, and cruelty and maltreatment of subordinates. The 35-year-old was arraigned in January and is scheduled to appear April 17 in a military court. He remains on active duty but is no longer a drill sergeant.

A search warrant affidavit filed in Hampton Circuit Court says officials began investigating Estrada in August after a soldier reported Estrada mistreated and sexually assaulted him.

Anyone who thinks this is going to do more than cause some hospitals to paint a wall or two, raise your hands.

For almost 23 years I’ve mostly been given Vitamin M (Motrin) and/or Flexoril for just about every ache and pain that I’ve ever had.  I’ve been to a physical therapist twice even though I’m supposed to see one every other week…he’s usually so overbooked here he actually says, “When it hurts bad enough, come in, I’ll crack it again.”  After 20 years of rather constant “shin splints” they finally figured out I had compressed compartments.  The only reason they decided to operate was that they’d become chronic and were “getting ready to blow.”

And most of my crap is just muscles and nerves not doing what they should.  I can’t imagine being in need of any real treatment.

05. March 2007 · Comments Off on An Open Letter to CPAC Sponsors and Organizers Regarding Ann Coulter · Categories: General

by James Joyner.

Conservatism treats humans as they are, as moral creatures possessing rational minds and capable of discerning right from wrong. There comes a time when we must speak out in the defense of the conservative movement, and make a stand for political civility. This is one of those times.

Ann Coulter used to serve the movement well. She was telegenic, intelligent, and witty. She was also fearless: saying provocative things to inspire deeper thought and cutting through the haze of competing information has its uses. But Coulter’s fearlessness has become an addiction to shock value. She draws attention to herself, rather than placing the spotlight on conservative ideas.

At the Conservative Political Action Conference in 2006, Coulter referred to Iranians as “ragheads.” She is one of the most prominent women in the conservative movement; for her to employ such reckless language reinforces the stereotype that conservatives are racists.

At CPAC 2007 Coulter decided to turn up the volume by referring to John Edwards, a former U.S. Senator and current Presidential candidate, as a “faggot.” Such offensive language–and the cavalier attitude that lies behind it–is intolerable to us. It may be tolerated on liberal websites but not at the nation’s premier conservative gathering.

The legendary conservative thinker Richard Weaver wrote a book entitled Ideas Have Consequences. Rush Limbaugh has said again and again that “words mean things.” Both phrases apply to Coulter’s awful remarks.

Coulter’s vicious word choice tells the world she care little about the feelings of a large group that often feels marginalized and despised. Her word choice forces conservatives to waste time defending themselves against charges of homophobia rather than advancing conservative ideas.

Within a day of Coulter’s remark John Edwards sent out a fundraising email that used Coulter’s words to raise money for his faltering campaign. She is helping those she claims to oppose. How does that advance any of the causes we hold dear?

Denouncing Coulter is not enough. After her “raghead” remark in 2006 she took some heat. Yet she did not grow and learn. We should have been more forceful. This year she used a gay slur. What is next? If Senator Barack Obama is the de facto Democratic Presidential nominee next year will Coulter feel free to use a racial slur? How does that help conservatism?

One of the points of CPAC is the opportunity it gives college students to meet other young conservatives and learn from our leaders. Unlike on their campuses—where they often feel alone—at CPAC they know they are part of a vibrant political movement. What example is set when one highlight of the conference is finding out what shocking phrase will emerge from Ann Coulter’s mouth? How can we teach young conservatives to fight for their principles with civility and respect when Ann Coulter is allowed to address the conference? Coulter’s invective is a sign of weak thinking and unprincipled politicking.

CPAC sponsors, the Age of Ann has passed. We, the undersigned, request that CPAC speaking invitations no longer be extended to Ann Coulter. Her words and attitude simply do too much damage.

As usual, someone out there says it better than I do.  I can get behind this one, and James has a lot of other bloggers who feel the same way.

I’m not ready to go with the label conservative, because in a lot of ways, I’m much more libertarian or downright liberal, but many of the conservative issues like “less government is a good thing” is exactly where my head is at.

04. March 2007 · Comments Off on Ann Coulter · Categories: General

I may never type that name after this post again.

I went off awhile ago about how I thought it was dumb that the actor from Grey’s Anatomy was going to rehab for calling his coworker a faggot. And I even used the word faggot in referring to gay people. I don’t consider it a slur. Other faggots call each other faggot and while I’m not a faggot, I’ve had a lot of faggot friends and I’ve made them a deal, they stop calling me butch boy and breeder and I’ll stop calling them faggots. But seriously, I’ve used the word less and less over the years. Some folks really find it hurtful and I do try to take that into account. Times change. I guess gay guys don’t even call each other faggot anymore. All of our gay friends live somewhere else these days…I’ve been out of touch.

I wrote a couple of years ago that I don’t believe that some on the far right actually believe what they’re saying. Ann Coulter is one of a few people in the media that keeps me from feeling comfortable about calling myself a conservative. I don’t want to be associate with that kind of hate. She’s one of those people who simply want to pick a fight with folks who don’t believe exactly what she believes about the world. She’s the Rosie O’Donnell of the conservatives. I don’t think she believes what she’s saying all that much, I think it’s simply a matter of getting her name in the media to sell her latest book, which keeps her name in the media, so she can write another book… Maybe I’m wrong…maybe she’s the Paris Hilton of the conservatives…I mean seriously, what has she done that’s all that important to society?
