Almost forgot about this on Leno last night. The truly amazing thing: he was calm…at times appearing thoughtful. It is amazing what a suit and haircut will do.

You know why I read Goldstein? I mean besides the fact he makes me spray milk through my nose when I’m not careful?

Because now and then he links to something serious like this article by Gerard Baker which says things that I suprisingly agree with and think about, but says them so much better.

The left and right in much of Europe agreed. America could no longer be seen as a civilized country: It had become an alien, medieval
sort of place. Europe should put even more effort now into building its own secularist, enlightened nirvana as a beacon of hope to the world.

UPDATE: Thanks to DragonLady I can now see all the images and Michelle Malkin’s Site isn’t jumping all over the place when I move the mouse. If you’re using Norton Firewall and you can’t see images on all the sites you visit, drop her or I a line.

Pat Tillman is up for Sports Illustrated’s Sportsman of the year. I didn’t hear bout Pat Tillman until after he had died in the line of duty. An NFL player who “had it all” and gave “it” up to serve his country after 9/11.

So go vote.

Today I’m thankful for:

God.
My Beautiful Wife for loving me no matter what.
Boyo for keeping me young and my eyes open.
Friends of Bill.
My Mom, Sister, Aunts and Uncles for reminding me where I come from.
The folks I work with for being good people even if they are mostly a bunch of bottom-feeding-scum-sucking contractors…and I mean that in the best way.
Every man and woman who now wears or who has ever worn a uniform in service to their country, their state, or their city.
The gang here at The Daily Brief and Digital Warfighter.
(Wayne’s World Dream effect…doodoodoodooderloop)
Butterball.
Karo Syrup.
Poppin Fresh.

Oreo Pie Shells.
Green Bean Casserole.
(POP)
Okay…lost my focus.

To one and all, may you have a bountiful and blessed Thanksgiving Day.

Okay, here’s the deal. I’m going to be home MOST Of the day…except when I’m tossing the football around with my son or beating myself up at the gym. So why don’t we just all post our bestest, most favorite-ist Thanksgiving Recipes? It’s still early for most of us…we can still run to the store if we see something we MUST have. I don’t cook on Thanksgiving…Beautiful Wife has the holidays down pat. I’m more of a stew/chili/soup kind of cook.

Father Pat’s Cranberry Chutney

4 C Cranberries, whole
1 C seedless raisins
1 2/3 C sugar
1 T ground cinnamon
1 ½ tsp ground fresh ginger
¼ tsp ground cloves
1 C water
1 med onion, chopped (abt ½ C)
1 med apple, peeled, cored, and chopped
½ C thinly sliced celery (use the smallest stalks)

Combine cranberries, raisins, sugar, spices and water in a large non-aluminium saucepan and bring to boil.

When cranberries start to “pop” stir in the onion, apple and celery, bring back to a boil, then lower heat and simmer for about 15 minutes longer.

Refrigerate.

If put in sterilized jars and properly sealed, this can sit on the pantry shelf until needed.
Great with Turkey, Beef, Pork.

22. November 2004 · Comments Off on Exactly When Did You Decide You Didn’t LIKE the Constitution? · Categories: Iraq: The Ugly

Every four or six years for the past 20 I’ve raised my hand and enlisted in the United States Air Force. The first thing, the very first thing that we vow to protect and defend is The Constitution of the United States.

Today I’ve seen a few bloggers, I’m not going to link to them, they don’t deserve it, refer to Kevin Sites as a traitor or worse for releasing the videotape of the Marine in the Mosque.

To those folks of questionable citizenship, I have some questions: When did you decide you didn’t like the Constitution and exactly where would you like to stop limiting the Freedom of the Press? Who gets to decide what gets shown? You? The Government? Me?

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

That applies to all of us you assholes, not just you. Deal with it.

21. November 2004 · Comments Off on National Treasure · Categories: That's Entertainment!

My family and I just returned from seeing National Treasure. As usual, some critics are so full of their own self-importance that they can no longer just enjoy a movie.

Okay folks, here’s a hint, if Nicolas Cage is starring in a Jerry Bruckheimer produced movie directed by Jon Turtletaub, your film majors are probably going to hate it. I have never given much thought to what film majors think.

I’m not a high concept guy when I actually decide to pack up the car and drive to the multiplex and spend up to $40.00 for my family to sit in a theater and eat overpriced popcorn and drink ridiculously priced watery Cokes. I usually only go to the movies when the big screen and big sound will be worth it. I see Nic Cage in a Bruckheimer movie advertised, I know there’s going to be blowing shit up and breaking things and it’s going to be “Suh-WEEEEET” according to Boyo. I also know that my brain will have to work a little…but not so much that it’s annoying.

National Treasure does not disappoint. As a matter of fact, it almost doesn’t let you catch your breath from one scene to another. It just keeps rocking and twisting and turning and giving you some pretty cool backdrops of America and some very cool although nerdy history facts. You’ll find yourself feeling damn proud of youself here and there if you know anything about U.S. History and I think there’s enough in there so that everyone should be able to figure out at least one clue by themselves and that’s part of the fun.

Nicolas Cage, Christopher Plummer, Jon Voight, Sean Bean and Harvey Keitel are almost all cast in their most recognizable stock roles. I’m okay with that. There’s very little trying to figure out who’s who or if anyone is going to wind up being something they’re not. All the figuring out is saved for history.

The critics missed the most obvious clue in the movie. This is an action movie for the people. As my eight year old said as we were leaving, “Quite the adventure!” Blink-blink…Beautiful Wife and I grin at each other. Why yes it was, wasn’t it?

Back in 2000 when I was still looking at Al Gore and George W. Bush and still wondering when this cosmic joke would end, I started to lean a little toward GW because, well, it sounded like he was putting a decent team together. I wound up voting Republican for only the second time in my life based on the concept of, “With a team like that, how bad can he do?” Okay…and the fact that Al Gore was the most condescending wanker to EVER appear on my television for a debate.

For this year it was pretty simple pretty early… The first time I saw Senator Kerry, my skin crawled, the hair on the back of my head stood up, my teeth itched. Although I strongly disagree with some of this administration’s policies, I have to say that I’m 100% behind The Bush Doctrine. I wish they’d follow it a little stronger in terms of ALL countries, but I know we can’t piss off the entire world all at once…wouldn’t be prudent. I also recognize that I’m one of the last people on earth who should be in charge of world decisions: My mind often sounds like Uncle Fester from the Addams Family screeching, “Shoot ’em in the back!” And don’t worry…I ignore my inner Uncle Fester…most of the time…as far as you know…

But that’s not what I had to sleep on. What I had to sleep on was the fact that while some pundits wondered out loud who would leave and who would stay we didn’t hear a thing from the administration about the changes that have been occuring in the past week. I’m not going to say if I like them or dislike them, that wouldn’t be prudent on my part since I’m still active duty, but I’m a little torqued in the jaw that there are so many changes and not a word was said about them before the election.

Would it have changed my vote? I doubt it. But now I have to wonder what else they didn’t talk about that they’re going to do to change things…and that bothers me. It’s like someone buying the 1985 Chicago Bears and finding out after that they weren’t going to get Sweetness and the Fridge and MacMahon, but oh…here’s Ditka… And while I love da Coach, he didn’t do it alone.

Update: Cox and Forkum’s current work kind of sums up part of my trepidation. I’m for The Bush Doctrine, but I like someone on the team who’s not all for it. Someone should play Devil’s Advocate.

The Wounded Warrior Project:

The Wounded Warrior Project was founded on the principle that veterans are our nation’s greatest citizens. The Project seeks to assist those men and women of our armed forces who have been severely injured during the conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other hot spots around the world. Many of the injuries are traumatic amputations, gunshot wounds, burns and blast injuries that will retire these brave warriors from military service. These wounded soldiers will return to civilian life minus one or more limbs, or with serious wounds or disfiguring scars, and will face greater challenges today obtaining assistance and finding opportunities that would enable them to provide for themselves and their families.

13. November 2004 · Comments Off on Gulf War Illnesses…Hey, Guess What? It’s Not Just Stress…Freakin’ Geniuses · Categories: Veteran's Affairs

The Military Times has a pretty good story on what anyone with a brain has known for years.

“A federal panel that has spent two years reviewing studies of Gulf War illnesses recommends focusing future research on the effects of the toxic substances that veterans encountered during the 1991 conflict.

That conclusion differs from the findings of a Clinton administration panel that determined that stress was the cause of the mysterious ailments afflicting thousands of Gulf War veterans.”

If you want to read the entire report you can get it here.

So…why would this administration push to research and fund something that a previous administration had already closed the book on?

I have my own thoughts on that and I’m going to keep them to myself tonight. I spent most of the day watching Beautiful Wife fight with TRICARE and the medical professionals at our local “care center” and I’m feeling more than a bit cynical.

She and I are about the same age, so the pop culture of her youth is almost identical to mine which is probably why I like her so much.
