Actually gave up watching after the first hour.  Nothing new from either of them.  Spouting their stump talking points.  They pre-empted “House” for that.

I’d say McCain probably won it but it didn’t matter.  There’s no excitement left in this race.  Everyone’s still in shell-shock from watching the economy crash.  Lots of folks are going to vote for Obama just to get the Republicans out.  And I don’t think I’m telling anyone anything they don’t already know.

A pro-Obama person at work told me yesterday, “Don’t worry Tim, back in Chicago, Obama was primarily a social workder.”  Yeah, thanks, I feel much better now.

So last weekend I decided to try out for a play at a small community theater here in town.  I wasn’t familiar with the show but the outline looked like there were a couple of small character roles that I used to do so well.  I was hoping to ease my way back into theatre after an almost 15 year hiatus.

Talked to the director on the phone last night and she wants me to play the title role.

I’m still in “Holy Crap” mode.  More later.

I’m SHOCKED, shocked I tell you…

Other things I’m shocked about:

Senator Barack Obama is black.

Senator John McCain is white.

Governor Sarah Palin is hot.

Senator Joe Biden’s mouth moves faster than his brain.

700 billion dollars could possibly be spent on better things than bailing out rich guys who don’t know when to fold when they’re holding a pair of twos and there’s a nut flush showing on the table.

Marines are just plain bad-ass.

Matt Damon is a fine writer/actor, but seriously, he should stay out of politics until he learns to Google.

Russia may not be the good buddies we thought they were in 1990.

Pakistan is shooting at U.S. troops on the Afghanistan/Pakistan border.

Bill Clinton seems to be undermining the Obama campaign.

22. September 2008 · Comments Off on iTunes Genius · Categories: General

I finally got around to playing with the iTunes Genius feature last night.  Basically, you pick a song from your library, Apple then recommends new music from their store which will go good with it.  I mostly ignore this part, because it mostly recommends music I already own, although I may not have purchased it from the iTunes store.  Click the genius button, and it will suggest a playlist of 25, 50, 75 or 100 songs from your library.  You can save that playlist or refresh it a couple times to see if there aren’t other matches.

Most of the time I got some really good songs that I may not have put together myself.  As far as I can tell, the “Genius” makes it’s matches from “similar artists,” “year song was released,” “beats per minute,” and “genre.”  “Jersey Girl” by Tom Waits gave me everything from Springsteen’s “Nebraska” to “Romeo’s Tune” by Steve Forbert to “Stuck Between Stations” by The Hold Steady to “Not Fade Away” by The Crickets.  Those feel right.  But it also gave me “Angel From Montgomery” by Bonne Raitt/John Prine, “Handbags and Gladrags” by Rod Stewart, and “Tumbling Dice” by the Stones.  And Dylan…lots of Bob Dylan.  So maybe there’s a “Gravel In Their Voice” category in the database that doesn’t show on the front end.

I basically like Genius.  I’m lazy.  When I try to make playlists myself, I over-think my way into complete paralysis.  I’m not completely in synch with the Genius, but it does give me a good starting point.

The initial setup takes some time, so before you download it and set it up, understand that depending on the size of your collection, you’re probably going to need at least an hour.  And Apple will read your entire library before it sends a copy of that list to itself.  If you’re afraid of Apple knowing what’s in your library, you’re not going to choose to do this.  Personally, I bought and paid for all of my music, not all from iTunes, but it’s all bought and paid for so I don’t much care if they know or not.

Just a couple suggestions.

Tina Fey as Sarah Palin appearing with Hillary:  Saw it coming and it was still funny.  However, people from Alaska don’t sound like they’re from Minnesota or Northern Wisconsin.  It’s a different sound altogether.  Ya might want to spend some time outside of New York now and again.

Sticking every sports star that hosts the show into that locker room with the creepy coach playing the tape and dancing like Gumby on meth…not funny.  Wasn’t funny last season with Peyton Manning, not funny tonight with Michael Phelps.  Best part, Michael Phelps lowering his head and shaking it because he couldn’t believe his agent talked him into this.

The parents with the creepy kids whom they impose on their guests…not even remotely funny.

Was a time when SNL hosted the cutting edge in music.  That time was between 1975 and 1985 with occaissional brilliance in the 90s.  I don’t know who Lil Wayne is and if he’s the best rap has to offer, it’s dying as bad as rock is.

Alaska Pete?  This is your answer to Sarah Palin?  Alaska Pete?  How lame can you get?  The rest of Weekend Update wasn’t much better.  The lame political comedian, seriously not funny.  Makes me want to hurt someone.

The riff on the T-Mobile commercial was a little funny, but too long…and that commercial is over a year old.  And the customer service reps at T-Mobile are going to hate you for saying that 10,000 free text messages, free nights and weekends come with a MyFaves plan.

Andy Samberg’s videos are oddly amusing, but I can see them on YouTube.

I’m not finishing this, it’s too painful.  I can’t believe I missed Man Against Wild for this.

UPDATED to include the Tina Fey/Sarah Palin opening.  Somehow missed it last night.

Dear Sarah Palin Attackers,

At this point, only a week and a half after Sarah Palin was announced as the Republican pick for the VP candidate, whenever I hear or see a new attack on her, I simply roll my eyes and assume it’s bullshit.

Too much, too silly, too fast.  Nothing’s sinking in.  My eyes just sort of glaze over whenever some new, negative report of her “wrongness” comes on the air or over the net.

To be quite honest, it’s pissing me off.  The more you attack her, the more likely I am to vote for McCain and her, and I wasn’t all that excited about him before you started flinging the crap.

And Senator Obama?  The difference is, when Senator McCain made the “lipstick on a pig” remark last year, he was talking about Senator Clinton’s medical insurance program, you seemed to be attacking Governor Palin herself. That’s not the sexism card, that’s the, “What happened to disagreeing without being disagreeable?” card.

So just keep it up, we may not be paying attention to the details any more, but we are paying attention to what you’re attacking.  You’re attacking the person, not her policies.

What you’re not getting is even though a lot of us don’t agree with her on everything, I know I don’t, we admire her for what she’s accomplished and who she is.  We admire her for being so freaking normal compared to the rest of the political world.

You blew it.  When you attack her, it feels like you’re attacking me, disagreements and all.  I can relate to her a whole lot better than I can to you.  Every time you throw mud at her, it splashes onto me.  You seemed to have missed that.

And if you missed that, I just think you’re too dense to run the country.

UPDATE:  In all fairness to Senator Obama, once I saw the entire clip, the argument can be made that he was talking about McCain and his policies vs Governor Palin.  Although the crowd obviously didn’t take it that way.

We’re half watching the McCain/Palin rally in Colorado Springs.  There are a lot of American Flags in the audience.  Where did they all come from?

Apparently, vendors cleaning up Invesco Field after the DNC found them heading for the trash!

I know, to many people the American Flag is just a party favor, to others, kind of big deal.

To me, it tells me that I can’t even think about voting Democrat.  The organizers gave no thought to taking care of all those flags if folks didn’t want to take them home.  The participants gave no thought to what to do with them after they were done waving them.

No consideration.  That’s what I can expect from the Democrats, and that’s what I’ll give them.

They simply don’t get anyone outside of their scope.

Some of my favorite writers on the net are women.  Smart, funny, successful in what they’ve chosen to do, women.

So before I go to bed with my favorite woman, Beautiful Wife, I thought I’d surf around and see what some of my favorite female bloggers are talking about:

Venomous Kate:  “Sarah Palin Wowed My World.”

Sisu:  Just go to the main page and scroll down.

Rachel Lucas:  “Sarah Palin Makes Me Want to Dance.”

Every female writer over at Wizbang.

Just scroll down this page for Sgt. Mom’s take.

In almost every case, there’s some mention about how they were bored with the election already and how they’re now excited, pissed off, energized…add whatever adjetive you’d like…except bored.

I think the lefties are going to be VERY sorry that they pissed off the working Moms of this country.  They not only went after her family, they questioned whether or not she could be a good mom and do the Vice President thing at the same time.  Big mistake.  Huge honking blunder.

They basically questioned every working Mom’s ability to work and mother at the same time and even some Feminists with a capital “F” are going, “Oh no you didn’t!”

An old friend from back home, unrepentent hippie chick, voted Democrat her entire adult life…now thinking about voting for McCain/Palin.  Why?  The left wingers, so anxious to disarm Sarahcuda, pissed her right the hell off.  “What do you MEAN she can’t be a good mom and Veep at the same time?”  You see, that’s something only a stodgy ol’ Republican should say, not an “enlightened” Democrat.

31. August 2008 · Comments Off on Mandatory Sarah Palin Mention · Categories: General

Two days late, but, what the hell…here’s my take based on what I’ve read and seen in the last 48 hours.

The folks on the far right love her…which gives me pause.  I’m not a far right guy.  Someone who goes by the tag, “Social Conservative” makes me think of Gladys Kravitz, peeking out from behind her curtains, making decisions about how my life ought to be.

The folks on the far left hate her…this makes me smile.

She’s originally from Idaho, moved to Alaska, went to college in Idaho, and then went BACK to Alaska.  I understand that.  Idaho’s not as “civilized” as much of the U.S., but it’s not Alaska.  Anyone who chooses to live up there, has my respect.

She’s a babe, in a “naughty librarian” kind of way.  Yes, that’s simply testosterone talking, but hey, at my age, when it talks, I listen.

I’m not  thrilled that she’s been accused of trying to get her ex brother in law fired and then fired the guy who wouldn’t fire the brother in law.  There’s an, “Off with their heads!” feel to that.  Is the McCain camp THAT sure that she didn’t do anything wrong?

The experience thing.  We’ve had experienced people in office before and I haven’t been impressed.  I don’t think the Presidency or Vice Presidency should be held “professional” politicians.  Quite honestly, I’m against professional politicians out of sheer orneriness (sic).

I’ve heard that her huband and son aren’t Republicans, they’re independents.  I think that’s simply amazing and it’s definitely a plus.

A couple women I work with are poli-sci majors and they think McCain has given the race away.  “No WAY a woman should be the VP with a President who’s THAT old.  Americans won’t have it!”  Hmmm, makes me want to vote for MCain just to prove them wrong.

I’m not voting for either candidate based on their Veep pick, but I’m with Mom…pass the popcorn, this has finally become interesting.

28. August 2008 · Comments Off on Things Not Allowed in Invesco Field Tonight · Categories: Politics

Proof…proof I tell you that the DNC is un-American!

Here’s the list of items that won’t be allowed into Invesco Field for Barack Obama’s acceptance speech:

From the Rocky Mountain News:

Outside food and beverage of any kind, including alcoholic beverages, coolers and bottled water

Umbrellas

Large bags, suitcases or backpacks

Noisemakers, air horns, whistles, cowbells (???!!!), horns, bull horns or other voice enhancement devices.

Signs, banners, flags or any other items that would either obstruct the view of a patron or serve as a security risk

Any and all unauthorized merchandise, including unapproved pamphlets, handouts, advertisements, etc.

Knives of any size, razor blades or sharp or pointed objects like scissors and knitting needles

Mace, pepper spray or aerosol containers

Fireworks

Weapons of any kind, including toy weapons, or any article that might be used as a weapon or compromise public safety.

Canes that aren’t used for medical reasons, chains, or sticks of any length

Screwdrivers or Leatherman brand or similar tools

Dangerous or hazardous items or materials including chemical, biological, radiological agents

Animals (except service dogs and guide dogs)

Folding chairs

Laser devices

Tripods

Bikes, inline skates, skateboards, scooters, shoes with wheels

Illegal drugs and any other illegal substances

Frisbees or inflated balls of any kind.

Do you see that?  NO COWBELLS.  Proof that they’re a bunch of commies!

Which just goes to show that Chris Muir is actually more topical than I thought…actually, I’m wondering if he’s more topical than HE thought.

On a side note, did you SEE the stage.  Designed, and I shit you not, by the same guy who designed Britney Spears’ stage for her last tour.  You can’t make this shit up.  I swear this guy wants to give it away.

27. August 2008 · Comments Off on I’m Liking This “Work” Thing · Categories: Memoir

So one of the guys I work with quit unexpectedly yesterday.  He’d given his two week notice on Monday after he’d complained about getting more duties without more pay and then when he came in yesterday, 15 minutes late because  they weren’t willing to accommodate his “need” of coming in and leaving a half an hour earlier than the rest of us because of heavy traffic…he quit.  Ummmm, isn’t that called “rush hour” and doesn’t the rest of the world live with it every day?

I don’t remember the last time I saw someone just “quit” a job.  Here before lunch, gone after.  Didn’t say I word to me…who’s getting all of his duties plus my own.  Quite honestly, I’m still kinda bored.  I don’t see where he was working all that hard, but he’s older than me and has a disability, not one that I can see effects his ability to do office work, but what do I know about his life?

Thank you United States Air Force.  Where other folks see too much work, I just see a quiet, normal day…kinda boring.

I used to say that the Air Force was the easiest job I ever had after being a drug store clerk, mover, roofer, tin man, bartender and a photo lab chemical engineer…not to mention the very few acting and other theatrical paying gigs I had.   Everyone’s asking me if I’m “okay.”  I keep telling them that most of the time in the Air Force I walked into an office weeks, if not months, after the person I was replacing had left.  I’m fine…really…no worries.  If I can’t handle it, I’ll let you know.

I want to giggle like a fool when they ask how I’m doing.  Seriously.  After a year in a call center taking up from 60-100 calls a night, making LESS than I’m making now, this job seems like an absolute breeze.  It helps that I’ve been doing this kind of work for 23 years.  It helps that I don’t have a list of additional duties a mile long to go with them.  The guy who runs the facility is also the safety and security guy.  The IT guy actually shows up, and I’m not kidding, within 10 minutes after calling him!  I KNOW!

So I’m getting an education in the civilian work force…I’ve already learned they can just fire you, even when you admit you’ve messed up, and you really can just up and quit without any notice.

Question for you all…should I just keep taking on more work until I’m comfortable, Air Force style, or should I pad my limit a bit?  I’m not sure I even know how to do that, but thought I’d ask.

Really?!!  I don’t think I could be LESS excited.  Okay, I could have been less excited.  He could have picked some nobody that no one had ever heard of outside of their state.

I don’t know much about Biden other than a bit about how he plagiarized something back in 87, and then again in law school…which, when you look back on the news of an Obama speech last winter, kind of makes sense.  On the other hand, I know I’ve heard a lot about how Biden is strong on foreign affairs so that’s going to help fill in some of Obamas gaps.  Sort of like how Dick Cheney filled in Presidents Bush’s gaps on…oh I can’t type a list that long, you know what I mean, and you know how well THAT worked out.

Well, that makes November easier.  Even if McCain picks Lieberman, which I think personally think is a great ticket, I believe McCain is going to just keep on crawling up and up and up the polls.  Not because anyone really wants him as President, just because he’s “mostly harmless” in a Hitch-Hikers Guide to the Galaxy sort of way.

22. August 2008 · Comments Off on You May Obliterate Bands You Hate · Categories: That's Entertainment!

If you could erase any five bands/artists from music history, who would you choose?

Difficulty: “but if you erased (insert band here) then all your favorite bands wouldn’t exist” is not a valid answer. We’re talking fantasy here.

My answers were:

I’m going to try and cover one band from each of the last five decades. There are really too many to keep it down to five, but…

60s: The Beatles. I can listen to them now without retching, just barely.

70s: Bread. Seriously…the sound of David Gates’ voice will cause me to twitch.

80s: Toto. Was almost Metallica because when they first came out I seriously thought they were a parody band, but then I remembered “Rosanna.”

90s: DMB. I’ve been mostly clean and sober since 1988 with some relapses. Been good since 2000. I’m told that’s why I don’t like them.

00s: Nickelback. Actually, I kind of like most of the music of this decade…this one was hard. And though they technically were around in the 90s, I didn’t start to loathe them until the radio started playing them so freaking much.

Stolen from Michele at A Big Victory.
